Omotesando

The immaculate MoMA Design Store Omotesando is just as it should be, safely tucked away in the basement level of Gyre across from the luxurious Omotesando Hills. But don’t let the fashionable ladies and the MoMA’s “member’s discount prices” scare you off! The MoMA Design Store in Omotesando can offer your Tokyo shopping experience far more than the average museum gift shop can.

Your experience in the MoMA Design Store Omotesando begins as soon as you approach Gyre. Home to old mainstays and fashion newcomers, Gyre’s look is sure to catch your eye. The slanting visuals of the black glass panes draw your eye towards a softly-lit white staircase leading down into the black granite sidewalk. As you glide down the steps and though the blast of air at the door that is oddly reminiscent of the Museum of Modern Art itself, you are greeted to a display of neatly organized trinkets, strangely formed objects, and furniture that is out of this world. Each object has found its own home on a meticulously cleaned white shelf amid equally lovingly selected home decor and whimsical objects.

Although everything at the MoMA gift shop in the Museum of Modern Art Tokyo may not be available in the MoMA Design Store Omotesando location, you will certainly not be left wanting for items that epitomize MoMA’s distinct and well-known artistic flair. And there is no shortage of unique gifts and souvenirs here. Maybe that special little bundle of joy in your life would like a Keith Haring rocking horse? Could you wow your father with a terracotta planter’s pot that disguises a miniature grill? Or maybe your friend deserves a cereal bowl that keeps the milk and cereal separate (for the ultimate crunchy satisfaction)?

No matter what you’re looking for in a gift, the MoMA Design Store in Omotesando will not disappoint. The Museum of Modern Art prides itself in the variety and quality of the art that it delivers to the world and expresses that passion through the offerings at the MoMA Design Store Omotesando. A word of caution to the casual shopper, however. If you are looking to someday visit this fantastic establishment, it is better to do so sooner rather than later. The popularity and novelty of the newest items found in the MoMA Design Store spreads fast among the residents of Omotesando Hills.

If you have friends in Japan, you might hear some people say that there are two kinds of styles for women. Either “gyaru or hime.” Girl or princess. Girl style is what you will mostly see in Shibuya: impossibly high heels, tight jeans, hair two miles high, and crop tops galore. Harajuku is where you will see the “princesses” with their pink, pearls, and tiny pets in their purses. It is easy to find stores to satisfy these particular genres, they are littered all over Shibuya, Omotesando, and Harajuku. However, what if you are a girl who falls somewhere outside or in between these fashion trends? What are you to do if you do not like to sway one way or the other? If this sounds like you then move beyond Harajuku’s Takeshita-dori and go straight into Omotesando. In the midst of this shopping district, you will find the Cat Street brand of X-Girl. X-Girl is a clothing label that caters to the ladies who are in between, like to dress down without looking frumpy, and have a little quirky sense of adventure.

X-Girl’s sense of style could be categorized as comfortable with flair. This can be said because their signature pieces include their screen printed T-shirts and denim. T-shirt dresses, embellished T-shirts, T-shirts with pockets, T-shirts that have been deconstructed. If you can think of a style that you can create with one piece of cotton, then you can probably find it on X-Girl’s shelves. Not to say that they are without style. Whether it has a quirky saying on it or is just plain monotone colors, their styles are easily integrated into the most fashionable of wardrobes. As previously mentioned, X-Girl has a great selection of denim in styles ranging from cut off shorts to boyfriend to skinny. The perfect classic combination of jeans and a T-shirt is perfected at X-Girl.

They have accessories that are equally hard to resist. You can pick up wallets with interesting hardware or handbags that could essentially fit your whole cosmetic and key collection (and a bento box and bottle of green tea) inside. Keychains, key rings, hair elastics, hand towels, and lighters can be found with the X-Girl logo emblazoned across their accessories which come in a variety of eye popping, hard to miss colors. X-Girl also has seasonable options in their accessories department such as floral prints, glittery snakeskin, or graffiti style bubble letters. Whatever your style when it comes to accessories and wallets, you can definitely find something to pick up at X-Girl.

If you are neither “gyaru” or “princess” and are looking to chill out in some stylish T-shirts and jeans, then head on out to Omotesando and give X-Girl a try!

The fashion label Juana de Arco, created by designer Mariana Cortez from Argentina, in 1994 and has been promoting a message of caring for others while making yourself feel good ever since. Since the brand was created back in South America, it has gained popularity all over the world and particularly in Japan. The style that encompasses a bohemian sensibility and lightness has also become popular in Japan in recent years so it is no wonder that fashionistas of Japan would welcome the Juana de Arco fashion label into the realm of Japanese fashion. Along with creating colorful and brilliantly happy designs, Mariana Cortez has also formed a charity that branches off of her clothing label. Instead of getting rid of the beautiful pieces of cloth that are unusable after an item of clothing is sewn together, Mariana Cortez has been sewing them together or weaving them into rugs, toys, and other usable items that she will later donate. So while you are making yourself into one of the most lively looking people around by wearing an item from Juana de Arco, you are also helping the people of South America in a way.

What makes Juana de Arco so unique is their use of color. Every inch of each item is covered with swaths of color and pattern. You will not be finding any plain black or white items at Juana de Arco. If you are also into yoga, then Juana de Arco is definitely a place that you should go! All of their items are designed with freedom of movement in mind. Whether it be their peach colored maxi T-shirt dresses or their mulit colored, patchwork styled harem pants, you will not ever feel constricted in their clothing. While everything at Juana de Arco is cut in simple and stylish ways, there is one item that is just a little bit out there but also extremely popular. From the front, this one garment looks like a regular everyday tank top. From the back, however, you will find a pair of puffy butterfly wings affixed just below the shoulder blades. They are hard to resist and also sell out quickly so get them while you can!

Mariana Cortes also has a firm belief on the importance and significance of lingerie to a woman. The thought being that whether you are wearing a suit to work or your favorite party dress, your lingerie, the clothing that is closest to your skin therefore your heart, is what you are truly expressing yourself with. As a result, Juana de Arco’s line of lingerie and swim suits are just as colorful and light hearted as their clothing. Whether you go for comfort or sex appeal when it comes to your under pinnings, Juana de Arco can give you just the right piece to express your true style.

Juana de Arco’s only store, located in Omotesando, is a pleasant mix of fashion and philosophy. Whether you are going in to simply take a peek or to indulge in their wholesome message, Juana de Arco is absolutely a place you want to check out!

A lot can be said about the shopping in and around the Omotesando area of Tokyo. Not only do you have the main drag at the end of Takeshita-dori that is home to shops like Wego and Awesome Store, but the deeper you go exploring within the back streets of this shopping super town the more you will discover. It really speaks to the variety and breadth of Japanese street fashion that so many stores, styles, and genres can be packed into this one small area of Tokyo while all places coexist in fashion harmony. While some fashion labels are developing and progressing the face of current Japanese street fashion, there are other places along this Japanese fashion district that have become established cornerstones of the fashion world. Even though this particular store was only founded in 2006, the fashion label Mercibeaucoup has really made a name for itself and has been consistent in it’s offerings of hip and current styles.

Mercibeaucoup, may be a young clothing label, but they already have gained a very positive reputation in the Japanese fashion sphere. Mercibeaucoup has become known for their bright and whimsical use of colors and patterns to accentuate the lines of the body. Not only that, their utilization and unique use of accessories has also become famous. Despite their well accepted history, the latest fashions that are coming from the Mercibeaucoup label are equally varied and adorable. The latest line explores the use of layering in combination with well placed screen printing. Another good thing about this line is that there are plenty of styles for both men and women to choose from!

For the men, you can pick up some styling harem pants that won’t lake you look like you are melting under fabric. The guys shopping at Mercibeaucoup also have some extremely unique foot wear to choose from as well. The ladies have a wonderful selection of colors and patters to choose from. For both men and women, Mercibeaucoup utilizes a tasteful distribution of fringe and tassels that bring movement to their clothing.

The accessories available at Mercibeaucoup are also worth taking a peak at. Their truly unique use of screen printing, tassels, and natural fabrics makes for a one of a kind bag. Maybe pick up some of their signature semi colon earrings or some of their unisex rope bracelets. Their selection of socks and hosiery are a nice combination of cute and utilitarian.

If you find yourself in the Omotesando or Aoyama area looking for a place to shop, why not stop by Mercibeaucoup and see what they have to offer?

The Harajuku and Omotesando area is jam packed with an endless maze of boutiques, name brand shops, and department stores that it would take a lifetime to explore every single street and back ally way. This being said, there is a hidden back road area of Omotesando that should definitely be explored. Just across the street from Harajuku’s famous Takeshita-dori and near Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s favorite second hand shop,G2?, is the pastel painted Nadia Flores en el Corazon (or just Nadia for short). Although Nadia’s location is well hidden and may be difficult to find, going out and seeking it is definitely worth your time because there are some real fashion finds inside this ultra hip clothing and accessories store.

Before taking the journey to Nadia, you should take a look at their social media influence on the fashion world because it will only motivate you more to go to their Omotesando location. In line with the way fashion culture is developing today, Nadia as a strong social media following and has become somewhat of a celebrity in the eyes of street fashion photographers and bloggers alike. Nadia is more or less on the front lines of the most current fashion trends that are always rapidly emerging in Japan.

Although the purple exterior of Nadia is understated, do not underestimate what is going on inside this store. The spacious interior is barely decorated, with concrete floors and exposed wiring, which leaves the clothing neatly arranged on hanging racks to speak for themselves. Accessories are neatly strewn about the store which gives both a gallery sensibility as well as a feeling of being in someone’s jewelry box.

The clothing selection at Nadia is extremely chic and in with what the fashion trends are and right now, hipster and understated fashion is the name of the game. You can get faux football jerseys with names from The Simpsons written on the back, almost impossibly tall platform converse shoes, or a back pack with leather angel wings applied to the back. Nadia is truly a hipster paradise. You can throwback to the 1990s with some tattoo choker necklaces or jelly bracelets and top it all off with a decked out bucket hat. If you have a style that is truly your own, then you can go to Nadia and be immersed in an atmosphere that is as unique as your style sensibility is.

“Paper conveys not only the written word but also the senders’ strong will to communicate.”  In a world of mobile technology and instant communication, Winged Wheel aims to boldly re-invent the medium of paper: to transform paper’s purpose in a world where e-mail, instant message, or text have replaced the classic letter.  Winged Wheel does this by creating warm and tender works of art.

Paper sold at Winged Wheel is made from either cotton from the base of Mt. Fuji, or from the traditional Japanese mulberry tree.  Everything from wedding invitations, to business cards can be found amongst the elegant shelves of WW.  Each piece is patterned or embroidered with various designs as to cater to each of its customers.  Whatever your taste, you can be sure to find the perfect paper to send a letter, or whatever it may be, to your loved ones.
