HARLEM is located in the same building as Atom. Head towards the love hotel/club district located behind Shibuya’s 109. Most of the big clubs in Shibuya are side by side on one street. The entrance to HARLEM is marked by a big red carpet located outside between Atom’s and Shibuya O’West’s entrances. It’s a bit hard to find if you don’t know what to look for. There is ID checking at the door.
The club itself is divided into three parts: the enormous dance floor, upstairs sitting area, and VIP room. The dance floor is one big open space with a midsize bar in the corner by the entrance to the dance floor. Two crystal disco balls spin high above covering everything in tiny dots of changing color. The high ceiling and large open dance floor give HARLEM a warehouse party feeling. Standing tables sporadically line the walls, but most of the seating is on the second floor. Head up the stairs to a slightly better lit, slightly quieter and ridiculously red café-style seating area. A bar style balcony allows resting patrons to look out over the dance floor and watch other people jump around. A small bar window is located at the top of the stairs to allow people in the seating area less strenuous accessibility to drinks aka no stairs. The VIP area is also located upstairs next to the seating area hidden behind big red curtains.
The drink selection is that of your typical Tokyo club with prices varying from 500 JPY to 900 JPY. Cover charge varies from 2,500 JPY to 3,000 JPY depending on the event and whether or not you have ovaries. However, if you bring a flyer and go before midnight the cover drops usually to 1,000 JPY, but can sometimes be more like 1,500 or 2,000 JPY. Cover charge comes with one free drink for both men and women. Flyers and prices can be found on the website.
The club is kind of dead until a little after 12:30am, when it slowly starts getting busy. From about 12:30am to 2am is the perfect time for dancing and moving around. There is just enough people to make it fun to dance but not enough to reduce your dance space to a tiny square. The music is mostly hip-hop, rap, and RnB both old and new school. Every once in awhile, HARLEM has an international guest perform, like one of the members from LMFAO.
The crowd seems to be more Japanese with a few foreigners but the staff and menus are English friendly. Mostly, the crowd is made up of people in their twenties but a few middle aged people can be found as well as people with more alternative lifestyles. The whole mindset of the crowd was just have a good time. HARLEM is a hip-hop themed club that offers a large but simple dance set up. It’s great if you’re into hip-hop and offers a large space in which to enjoy the night.
