I recommend the Shibuya Hobgoblin because it is one of the most entertaining and liveliest pubs in the area.
This British-themed establishment is very different to your usual Tokyo drinking hole. For starters, patrons can mingle! People normally eat and drink while sitting at grand wooden tables during the pub’s quieter times, such as the middle of the day when the atmosphere is sedate. But they are swept to their feet when the Hobgoblin gets packed during its weekly events, giving patrons the chance to interact with each other and meet new people.
This buzz is one of the pub’s best features. If you watch a major sporting event, don’t be startled to see patrons donned in the official outfit of their favorite team. And don’t be surprised by the roar of the crowd either. This pub can get rowdy – but it’s all in good jest. In fact, the revelry is encouraged and gives this venue a freshness that is rarely found in the sterile environment of a typical izakaya. Other events worth checking out include the monthly comedy shows and music nights.
The Hobgoblin is equally as popular for its hearty pub grub. The nachos are a particular delight. It is such a humongous dish that a half-size is available for the faint hearted. The Sunday roast is also a big draw card. Be warned though, the desert sells out quickly as it’s very, very delicious.
The pub has the aptly named Hobgoblin beer, imported from Britain. It also boasts a wide selection of international drinks – better than the Hub – but they are at the pricier end of the spectrum.
A range of people are attracted to the Hobgoblin. The pub undergoes a giant change when an event is on, transforming from a relaxed spot to drink to a one that rages with excitement. Patrons range from those wanting a simple drink or meal to die-hard sporting types.
Dogenzaka and an array of clubs are around the corner, making this a good pre-partying spot to meet your friends. Or you could just swing by during a quieter time for the delicious food, great drinks and relaxing atmosphere. It is great for both small and large groups, but could be a lonely experience if visited alone (when an event isn’t on of course). The Hobgoblin also has pubs in Akasaka, Roppongi and Kobe.
