Kamohida Asakusa

Kamohida(かもひだ)is one of the many small, yet plentiful shops along the famous street of shops known as “Nakamise-dori” in Asakusa. Kamohida specializes in traditional Japanese toys (for both children and adults to enjoy alike).

A Westerner will find that traditional Japanese toys are neither abnormal nor entirely foreign to his or her home culture. While many of the toys are used for different games, they do resemble quite a few of their Western counterparts.

Some of the Japanese toys found in Kamohida’s humble shop include (but are not limited to) – Menko Cards (playing cards), Tako (kite), Hanetsuki (a paddle for a game similar to badminton), and Koma (spinning top).

Prices for these unique toys range from as little as 300yen (~$3) to as much as 1500yen (~$15) depending on the item and intricacy.
