The Best Happy Hours and Cheap Drinks in Tokyo

written by EnAble Japan May 8, 2014

Looking for a place to have a drink that won’t make your bank account weep? Tokyo may be an expensive city, but there are plenty of options for cheap drinks.

Havana Café

Havana Café in Roppongi has one of the best happy hours in Tokyo. Everyday from 4 p.m.- 7 p.m. Havana Café offers drinks for 200-500 yen. For 200 yen you can get basic cocktails (moscow mule, gin and tonic etc.), for 300/400 yen you can get beers and more cocktails (mojito, cubre libre etc.) and for 500 yen you can treat yourself to one of their delicious frozen magheritas or daiquiris. Havana Café also sells delicious tex-mex food, so you can enjoy some nachos along with your drinks. For more information, please visit our review of Havana Café.

Another popular happy hour in Tokyo is offered by the British pub chain, Hub. Between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Hub offers a wide variety of discounted drinks, starting from basic cocktails for 190 yen. Many drinks are half price and others have a 30% discount. A great thing about Hub is that they can be found all over Tokyo, so if you fancy a cheap drink in the early evening you’re probably not too far away from a Hub. If this sounds like fun, we’ve got reviews on both the Roppongi and Shinjuku Kabukicho branch.

Probably the best way to grab a cheap drink anytime is to head to one of the hundreds of izakaya all over Japan. These Japanese-style bars come in all sizes and styles, some more expensive and some cheaper. To find a cheap one, your best bet is to head to any busy street where the izakaya staff stand outside trying to lure customers into their place with cheap drink options, for instance 200 yen beers or 1000 yen for 2 hours all-you-can-drink deals. If this fails, you can go to one the 270 yen (all food and drink is 270yen!) places that are found all over Tokyo. These are easily noticeable from outside with “270” on a large sign. A great thing about these is that they usually have touch-screen ordering available in English.

(Note: For all of you Tarantino fans out there, Gonpachi is the izakaya where Kill Bill was filmed at.)
